Pokemon Go! Update Information:

This post is to track major updates to the Pokemon Go app.  The game is new and is off to a massive start.  Niantic though has mentioned that they have come across a few things they want to tweak and also some major things they want to add to the game.  Some of their ideas mentioned at San Diego Comic Con 2016 by Niantic include an ability to upgrade Pokestops, a Pokemon transfering system, and person to person battling.  They also revealed artwork of the three leaders of the different teams and promised to add meaningful aspects to the game around teams.

Update October 7, 2016

New update makes it so that a player can go to a "friendly" gym (A gym controlled by their team Blue, Yellow, Red) and use 6 Pokemon in training sessions instead of one. Also the Pokemon guarding the gym will adjust their CP lower to match that of players CP. This makes it so that a new player with low level Pokemon could still enjoy battling at a gym instead of showing up and getting clobbered.

Official Announcement from Niantic
Gym Training Just Got Easier... Trainers, As we continue to make improvements to Pokémon GO, we have made an enhancement to the Gym experience for Trainers of all levels. In an upcoming version of Pokémon GO, when training at a friendly Gym, Trainers will be able to bring six Pokémon to battle instead of one. In addition, the CP of the Pokémon you are training against may be temporarily adjusted lower during your training session to generally match your Pokémon’s battle capabilities. No matter what your level, you can now have an impact on your team’s Gym. Walk with your Buddy Pokémon to that nearby landmark and show your Team Leader that you can battle with the best!

Update: September 13, 2016
A few major updates have occurred.  Appraisal feature has been added to let players know how strong their pokemon is relative to other pokemon of the same species.  There is also a new Nearby tracking screen and the biggest update of the all the Buddy Pokemon feature.  The Buddy Pokemon feature has not yet rolled out to everyone but is live in some areas.  Some have found that the Buddy Pokemon feature has also only hit some providers and not others.

Update: August 12, 2016
Two major noticeable changes.  The Nearby Screen is now called the Sighting Screen for Pokemon tracking.  It does not show distance.  There is grass image added behind the pokemon in the sightings screen that looks cool but otherwise does not seem to do anything.  The screen updates about every 15 seconds with the Pokemon active on your map that you can see.

pokemon go driver message

A driving warning now flashes on the screen if Pokemon Go sees you are going to fast. You must confirm you are passanger.  The problem with this is that gps signals sometime seem to jump in the ap making it think you are driving when you are fact sitting on your couch or walking.

Update: July 30, 2016 -
Niantic released the following update with the following changes -

  • The footprints on the nearby screen were removed as they were not working correctly
  • Additional clothing options were added so Poketrainers could dress in the gear of their teams
  • Battling changes were made to reduce the power of some quick attacks like water gun.  This change is meant to increase the use of special attacks.  It also should help reduce the effectiveness Vaporeon.  Who had used these attacks in a dominating fashion.  More damage was added to be based off type or comparable damage making picking the correct type of Pokemon important.  Early reports say that Vaporeon's effectiveness has been very reduced.
  • Transferring Pokemon was made faster.  Instead of scrolling to the bottom of the Pokemon information tab and clicking transfer a circular button with three lines was added to the bottom right corner and is always visible.  This button opens a menu where a Pokemon can either be Favorited or Transferred.
  • An extra pop up warning was added when first turning on the game.
  • Battery saving mode removed

Captain America: Civil War bonus features
A new video that focuses on the production, art and story of Doctor Strange is featured within the Captain America: Civil War DVD. The DVD in HD comes out Sep 2, 2016 and the Bluray arrives one week later on Sep 9th.

First TV Spot for Doctor Strange:
I think most of this footage is reused from the previous trailers.  Some shots in the beginning look new.  Also there is a moment where Baron Mordo tells Doctor Strange that "There is no other way." Not sure what is going on there but likely Strange is getting ready to open up some can of ancient bad magic to save the day.  I wonder if the magic being used has a cost of hurting or tainting Baron Mordo that will play out by making him evil later on.

The film seems to be setting up a dynamic relationship between Mordo and Strange where they will be friends and allies in this film.  Something tells me at the end of the film something will occur that will set the men against each other for a sequel film.

San Diego  Comic Con 2016 Trailer
The 2nd trailer for Doctor Strange was shown at San Diego Comic Con.  Also at the con were all the costumes of the characters that were on display.  This trailer focused a little more on the threat facing Strange and his training to become the Sorcerer Supreme.

The main villain Kaecillius is seen telling Doctor Strange that he is "Death and Pain" and that he (Stephen) will "Die protecting this world".

There is also some humor in the trailer.  At one point Baron Mordo gives Strange a scrap of paper.  When Strange looks at the writing on the paper confused Mordo wittily responds "Its the Wifi password, were not savages".

Costumes on Display:
The Doctor Strange costumes appeared before a replica of the Strange's famous window from his Sanctum Santorum.  Strange's costume is in the forefront with Baron Mordos to the back left.

Luke Cage Review!
#sirkentsaid #toylab

Sir Kent is a guest blogger covering film on Toylab you can find him at the local theater or on the social media sites below:

Sir Kent Said Blogger Info:
Follow Sir Kent on Twitter and Google+:

Luke Cage is very good the series currently has a 5/5 stars on Netflix and I give it a 9 & ½ out of 10.

Let's begin with a question is Luke Cage "too black"? To many that question is silly.  Luke Cage is black and his comic series was very much about black culture, black history and black social issues.  That said on many comment sections about the series there were comments like....

"I think it was just too black for me"

or

"I didn't get it, too black for me"

or

"I don't get black culture"

"TOO BLACK" "TOO BLACK" "TOO BLACK"

I actually had to go back and rewrite this review because of a post by Matty B at TOY LAB shared  mentioning the comments of people asking if the series was "TOO BLACK".
Luke Cage series was “TOO BLACK”! WHAT DIRECTLY THE F'BEEP IS THAT??? For white people to complain about anything being “Too Black” is like Black people complaining about Trevon Martin being “TOO DEAD”! Remember how people lost their f'BEEPin’ minds when they made Spider-Man Mexican for a year?

Even members of f'BEEPin’ congress went bananas over that sh'BEEP! Don't even get me started on the shit-show that erupted when they featured a Black Stormtrooper! OMG!!! DUMBF'BEEPS, this is a FICTIONAL character that is set in a FICTIONAL world. WHY oh WHY are you getting your collective panties in a bunch?

Is the real reason for the "TOO BLACK" feeling that show is set in Harlem, a place that is deeply immersed in Black culture and you have no f'BEEPin’ knowledge or understanding about it? Is it because that it is centered around a Black POSITIVE role model that goes against all of your stupid ass, negative stereotypes? Is it because he wears a black hoodie and is bulletproof which must give some gun toting hillbillys out there a fBEEPin’ nightmares! People who know me know that I don't normally pull the “Race Card”. Just be ready if you liked the series.  Because to some people no matter how good or bad Luke Cage was to some it was just Too Black.

BUT PEOPLE! There was SO MUCH RIGHT with Netflix's LUKE CAGE.  So much right that you can bask in the sun and smile dumbly like you just got socked by one of Luke Cage's super powered fists.  Don't think I am nit-picking but I will try to find SOMETHING  legitimately wrong with it what some will argue Luke Cage to be the best Netflix adaptation of a Marvel hero yet. I AM NOT GOING THERE but HELL MAYBE I SHOULD.

Nit-Pick #1 - No Knives for Diamondback?
I'm just a fan so like all of my reviews, let's start with what I didn't like. Eric LaRay Harvey played the Hell out of Willis “Diamondback” Stryker and I even loved the twist they put into the plot adding a deeper relationship between himself and Luke Cage (Mike Colter).

The tiny problem I had with his character was that in the comics “Diamondback” earned his name in the street as being lethal with edged weapons and carried around an assortment of them to kill with.  Diamondback is reference to his skills with a knife.  Now, I did like the mob boss approach they took with him. I also found him to be far more believable and menacing than Jared Leto's punk ass Joker from SUICIDE SQUAD. But, it would have been nice to see him use a knife more than once throughout the entire series.

Nit Pick #2 Misty Knights Arm.
In the comic, we all know that Misty Knight (Simone Missick) was given a mechanical arm by Tony Stark after having it blown off while saving people from a bomb. However, after the way her arm seemed to be okay by series end, I don't think we will be getting that. In a side note, if some of the cast THINK they are too good for the small screen, those bitches better check themselves. The legendary Samuel L. Jackson himself appeared TWICE on A.O.S. So if THAT muthuf'BEEPa can do it, you ALL can do it! PLUS, this is Netflix.

Nit Pick #3
The series is way, way, way too black........Just joking sheesh you didn't believe I was going to say that did you?

And now to my review. I must give MAD PROPS to Marvel and Netflix for not only, once again, perfectly casting, writing and directing this series. But also having the big, hairy f'BEEPin’ balls to take on current hot-topic issue's that a LOT other networks or series would not. They addressed racial bias police tactics in inner cities. The brutality of police tend to show against innocent civilians and of course a few who are desperately trying to walk the line between the law and the people it's meant to protect.

Second to all of that is the music that is highlighted throughout the series. It flows from rap to hip-hop to neo-soul and back again. It pays respect to its history and meshes it with current poets, creator's and artist.

Summary and thoughts with some Spoilers

Some SPOILERS, Spoiler alert!

Luke Cage tells the story of Carl Lucas. The son of a preacher from Savannah, GA.

Out of jealousy and spite, his half brother, Willis Stryker, planted drugs at his place and ratted him out to the police for which he was sent to prison. While imprisoned, Lucas carried himself and behaved like a man with great pride and self respect. Almost as much as his obvious physical prowess. This drew the attention of a racist Corrections Officer by the name of Albert Rackham (Chance Kelly). Rackham was determined to either break Lucas or make him work for him.

After sending a few boys to try and beat him down (Which failed miserably), Rackham beatdown and threatened to kill “Squabbles” (Craig Mums Grant) if Lucas didn't fight for him in his underground fighting ring. Yup. This Fox New watching muthufBEEPa had a complete illegal fight club set up where he was making money hand over fist...LITERALLY! So, in order to protect the life of another, exactly what he DIDN'T want to have to do, Lucas started fighting. Somewhere along the long line of fights and wins, Lucas started to loose himself.

This became evident to not only “Squabbles” but to his prison group therapist Reva Conners (Parisha-Fitz Henly). Who not only had an interest in Lucas because of his chocolaty goodness but, because of something else that was a LOT more diabolical. After a breakthrough in therapy and in their personal relationship, Lucas decides to build a case against Rackham and get himself out legally. Of course, Rackham finds out and has “Squabbles” killed and Lucas beaten nearly to death by a person who will have a HUGE effect on his life later Herman “Shades” Alvarez.

Now we get to see the reason why the memory of Reva, a woman he THOUGHT he loved and could trust will forever be in question. She worked with the prison doctor Dr. Noah Burnstein (Michael Kostroff) who as it turns out REALLY WAS conducting experiments on prisoners! In order to save Lucas’s life, the good doctor exposed Lucas to an experiment that was a watered down version of the super-soldier experiment. It was meant to help soldiers heal from wounds on the battlefield in minutes or mere days, depending on the type of injury. However, in true comic book style, Rackham barges in during the treatment and starts turning knobs that crank up the energy input in the tank where Lucas was far past what it was meant to be.

This causes an overload that literally blows up in Rackhams face, killing him. After emerging from what was left of the tank, SOMEHOW unharmed and alive, Lucas finds Rackhams body. Knowing that they would NEVER let him out being found with the body of a C.O. that  he was KNOWN to have had a beef with, he punches a nearby wall and it crumbles, much to his shock. He then punches a hole out of the room and makes his escape from prison. Fast forward past his interaction with Jessica Jones and The Purple Man (I’m sorry, Killgrave) we find our reluctant hero hiding in plain sight in Harlem N.Y.

He is now known as Luke Cage and living an uneventful life working in a neighborhood barbershop that is considered by all to be “Harlem's Switzerland”. (A place of non-violence). The shop owner “Pop” (Frankie Faison) knows of Cage’s powers but not of his past. He is always trying to get him to use them for the good of the neighborhood. “Like those other fella’s uptown.” (Daredevil, The Punisher).

Cage is reluctant, not only because of his past but because of the fact that he doesn't want to be “Out There” again where people may be able to make him do things against his will like Killgrave did. As long as trouble doesn't come calling, he has no intention of exposing himself, or the simple, little life that he has carved out for himself. Unfortunately for him, that trouble is closer than he thinks. Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes has become arguably the biggest arms dealer in New York city. His power is aided by his ties to City Councilwoman Mariah Dillard. Who has been using his iron grip on the streets to further her own political gain.

Fast forward, fast forward, fast forward. That trouble that Cage had been trying to avoid finds it’s way to “Pop’s” barber shop in the form of having it riddled with bullets and “Pop’ shot in the neck and bleeding out in the arms of Cage. This was all due to the stupid ass actions of a young dumbf'BEEP who was seeking shelter int" Harlem's Switzerland”. This spurs Cage into action and he takes MUCH boot to Black ass at one of “Cottonmouths” clearing houses. “Shades” has been on the scene for a while but now has to advise “Cottonmouth” on how to weather this huge loss. Possibly how to avoid a visit from “Diamondback”.

The mere mention of “Diamondback’s” name inspires fear in most. He is a shadowy figure that some believe to be urban myth but few EVER want to meet personally. Cage’s role in the neighborhood continues to expand because of his proximity to all that is happening in Harlem. He is now of interest to Detective Misty Knight as well (Simmone Missick) who he SHAGGED THE HELL out of a few nights prior after work! Side note, let's keep count of all the walls Cage is hitting.

Reva, Jessica Jones, then Misty Knight and…? I'm getting to that. Misty has her own problems with a partner and co-workers that have ties to the very cause of Harlem's woes. I do like how they tied Clare Temple (Rosario Dawson) into this. She will be the tie that binds all of these series together, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, The Punisher and the upcoming Iron Fist. By chance, while at her mother's dinner, Claire runs into Luke and recognizes him as the guy Jessica Jones shot in the face with a shotgun (If you ain't hip, you're a horrible fan!).

They connect over breakfast and her current need to find direction in her life. Of course, she had no idea that that direction would involve her being in the vicinity of a powered individual and a psychopathic killer with HAMMERTECH apparently on speed dial! BTW, why the f'BEEP IS Justin Hammer in bed with “Diamondback”? I knew he sold to almost anyone but, what's his endgame working with him? Does this mean that we may get to see Justin Hammer at some point during the series?

Okay, I think I have given away enough of the plot to get you interested in it. I have certainly left a sh'BEEP-load out as well but, that is because, despite of what a few of you think, I DO TRY and not give TOO much away in these reviews. Let me just say that this series is fantastic in every way and Netflix has dropped the mike and moonwalked all over network T.V. yet again. It may start off a little slow for some but, bare in mind, you have to build the characters up. Or else you just get on long ass fight scene.

I give this series a 9 & ½ out of 10 and if you haven't seen it yet, pay your Netflix membership like NOW and do so! Haven't you wondered what everybody was talking about around the water cooler Monday morning?

Pokemon Battling and how to win
Alright so you have level 5 and you now want to go to a gym and try to battle.  No so fast grasshopper you are not READY!

Pokemon Go does not have much in the way of directions.  This post along with others is designed to help new users understand the important strategies of battling at gyms.

First lets cover why do you want to battle at a Gym?
1) Its fun to test out your Pokemon against other Pokemon
2) You get to brag when you beat your friends Pokemon
3) If you win your Pokemon will be seen as a gym Guardian by everyone in your neighborhood
4) If your Pokemon lasts as gym Guardian for 20 hours you will recieve free Coins that can be used to buy other Pokemon items.

Battling a Gym controlled by your Team

If you team is in control of a gym you can go there and battle.  Battling your own team is often referred to as "Training" your pokemon.  Battling at gyms from your own team helps build up your Team Gym's reputation which allow the gym to have more Guardian Pokemon stocked there.  If you beat enough of the Pokemon there your Pokemon can take the place of one of the Guardians there.

Update 10/6/2016
Niantic made a change that allows users to train up 6 Pokemon at friendly gym.  It also allows for the Guardian Pokemon at the gym to match the CP (Combat Power) of players Pokemon.  This should make it easier for new or sporadic players to enjoy gym battles in the game.

Message from Niantic on Update:

Gym Training Just Got Easier...
Trainers,
As we continue to make improvements to Pokémon GO, we have made an enhancement to the Gym experience for Trainers of all levels.

Battling a Gym from Another Team Considerations:

Build up your training level:
Really to be very successful at battling it is likely you will need to hit a trainer level of at least 10.  The reason for this is that more powerful Pokemon appear as your level gets higher.  Most players get to the 10 -20 level pretty quick but then it becomes a slow xp grind.  So if you are above level 10 you are at least comparable to some of your competitors.

Team Building:
Next you need to do is to build a team of high CP pokemon from as many types as you can.  Everyone is going to be able to build a high CP Pigeot and Ratticate which covers flying and Normal.  Try to get at least one other powerful Pokemon.  Do not focus on powering up Pokemon too much.  A lot of new players waste a lot of stardust powering up Pokemon when they should be focusing on increasing their training level.  At a higher training level you begin to capture higher level Pokemon.

Scout the Gym:

The next thing to do is to scout out the gym you want to battle at.  You can pull up a gym that is on your screen by tapping on it.  This will show what a few important facts including:  Which team is in control of the gym, which Pokemon are guarding the gym, and how powerful those Pokemon are.  What kind of Pokemon do they have, how many are there, and how powerful are they.  If you are attacking a high level gym you may need to attack it with some other players.

Figure out the type of Pokemon at the gym then pick your own Pokemon accordingly.  You can set the order of your pokemon up to be best arrayed against your foes.
Pokemon Types Explained
The type of attacks of a Pokemon vs the Type of the Pokemon determine a portion of each attacks effectiveness.  I have seen a few people attempt to break down the attack values and they seem to use a variety of variables.  The only one known for sure though is the type damage.

The Gym Battle begins
Once the battle begins you can quick attack by tapping on your screen, do a special attack by holding down on the screen, and also dodging by swiping to the side.  The special attack only becomes available when the special bar becomes full.

Most people just tap their screens as hard as they can and occasionally do a special. That said I have seen a few people really focus on dodging and do quite well.  Including, taking down much higher level Pokemon.

You can also switch Pokemon that are battling by transferring your Pokemon out and moving a new Pokemon in.  This can allow you to take advantage of Type mismatches.

Aftermath.
If you succeed the gyms reputation will be reduced.  If it is reduced enough then that team will get booted from the gym and the gym will lose its color.  This means the gym has gone neutral and anyone can take it.   At this time you can then add your Pokemon to the gym.  I recommend transferring your strongest level Pokemon to the gym.  Once your Pokemon has been added immediately attack the gym again.  Battling your own gym builds up its level.  You can also attack gyms that belong to your team to build up their level.

Why is Luke Cage not from Harlem?

$
0
0

Harlem in Luke Cage is Important
Luke Cage is a very TV series, that makes another strong addition to the Netflix based Marvel shows.  One of the underlying themes and conflicts in Luke Cage is his battle for the the soul of Harlem neighborhood.  In some sense this is similar to Daredevil's battle for his neighborhood, Hellskitchen.

Harlem is an important neighborhood from an American historical and cultural perspective.  The area has its share of problems that include crime, poverty and corruption but it also is considered a cultural jewel.  The cultural, social, political, scientific greats  that have come from Harlem could populate entire courses in college.  None of this importance is lost on the show.  One of the coolest aspects of Luke Cage for me was giving Harlem its day in the "mainstream" sun.

The show goes to great lengths to showcase Harlem.
Through Cottonmouth's club we are engaged with a variety of Harlem musicians like Raphael Saadiq, Charles Bradley and Jidenna..  Luke Cage walks the streets showing off local icons like the Apollo theater and a menagerie of Harlem locals are mentioned.  The show name drops Harlem figures like Langston Hughes, Billy Strayhorn, Percy Sutton, Geoffrey Canada, and ASAP Rocky.  Dapper Dan the famous hip hop tailor of Harlem appears as himself and even outfits Luke Cage.

The villains through the first half of the series are as invested in Harlem as the show is.  Both Cornell Cottonmouth and council woman Mariah Dillard have their eyes on transforming the neighborhood.  These characters are even shown to have neighborhood in heart at times.  Their loose moral code and ends justify the means actions tempt to corrupt and pollute whatever they touch.  Leaving it up to a single super powered individual to come in and set the neighborhood free.

Here is what struck me as odd.  The neighborhood's hero Luke Cage was suddenly not from Harlem anymore?  He was now from Georgia.  Not only that but when he escapes from Prison he first moves to Hellskitchen (Where we meet him in Jessica Jones) before finally landing in Harlem.  This is a big difference from the Luke Cage of the comics who is from Harlem and joins a street gang in Harlem.  His origins also have ties to Cottonmouth (It was Cottonmouth's drugs that were planted on him that led him to go to Seagate).

The characters Shades, Commanche, Willis "Diamondback" Stryker, were all in a Harlem based gang with.....Luke Cage called the Rivals.

While all of the characters around Luke Cage have maintained their deep relationship with Harlem, Luke Cage has that element stripped from him.

I can't but ask why?  The show invests so heavily in Harlem.  For those not in the know they may end up googling names to find out who was just mentioned.  This investment can come across as a bit preachy as it not so subtly tries to give the viewer a cultural lesson.  These investments come at a cost,  they slow the pace in some episodes as the cultural lessons marinate in place of the plot.  I am fine with marinating, so long as at the end of it I get a juicy steak.  To me the emotional impact from Pops, Missy etc could all have exaggerated if Luke was from Harlem.

But he wasn't...Not sure if I agree with this decision I think it really took away from the best elements of the series.  You can teach the lessons but you then need to connect the dots.  I never felt they fully connected.

So why wasn't Luke from Harlem.  Here is what I think the reason is.  The Jessica Jones addition in the defenders meant that the more mature, older, wiser Luke Cage would be needed.  The Luke Cage of the 70s was a bombastic ex gangster, out to do good, but also make money.  He was a hero ......for hire and that is what made him fun and different.  The mature Luke Cage is a husband, father, and leader of the New Avengers.  He is reliable, steadfast, and honest.  To make the Luke Cage and Jessica Jones work his maturity needed to evolve more quickly.  Instead of being young and bombastic, he is middle aged, and instead of being a wise guy from the city, he is a southern gentleman.  This also makes Luke Cage a better more nobler hero than his younger self but it also loses something.  That young Powerman drove home point ruthlessly while this Luke Cage feels polite and even gentle.

This new Luke Cage is not bad.  I actually like him a lot.
That said, I can't help but miss the bombastic, no nonsense, young Luke Cage that came from.....Harlem.

Pokemon Go - Best Moves

What are the Best Moves in Pokemon Go?

There are a few important ways to evaluate a Pokemon you have caught of a given species.  When you catch multiple of the same type of Pokemon you need to constantly be considering which you keep and which you trade in for Candy.  The first statistic to consider is the Pokemon's overall CP rating, the 2nd is its IVs, and finally is its move set. The Moves of a Pokemon are an important way of evaluating how good a Pokemon is.  There are many ways to use a Pokemon even with low IVs.

Each Pokemon in Pokemon Go comes with 2 moves, a Quick Move and a Special Move.  The Quick Move is the action taken during a finger tap in a battle.  The Special Move is the move taken when you hold your finger during a battle.  The Special move requires the player to build up the stamina bar.  Each Pokemon pulls its move from a set population of moves that are typically related to its Type.  Once a Pokemon has its moves, the moves do not change unless the Pokemon Evolves.

Ways to Evaluate Moves:

1) DPS - Damage Per Second - This is how damage a Pokemon can unleash using that Move.
2)  Type Combinations- There are Pokemon who have different type of Moves from their Type and these combinations can valued as they can increase its competitiveness against certain other Pokemon.  A Ghost Type Pokemon with Non Ghost Moves for instance is very competitive against Snorlax.  A Pokemon with a useful Move combination maybe valued just for this reason.

Who is Cheshire Cat?

Cheshire is a Luke Cage villain who possesses the ability to turn invisible.   As he disappears the last visible part of him is his eyes and smile.   He is both named and based off the Cheshire Cat character from Alice and Wonderland.   Cheshire has only appeared in a few stories but I have always found him intriguing.

Cheshire Cat and Big Brother battle Luke Cage

Cheshire is initially allied with another villain called Big Brother.  He follows around Luke Cage like an invisible spy.  Eventually,  Luke Cage kicks down the door of Big Brother and beats him in an epic battle.  Cheshire simply watches.   Big Brother manages to point Luke Cage in a different direction by providing him information on a competitor, the Baron.   Big Brother and Cheshire feel pretty smart when Luke Cages takes down the Baron.   Before too long though Luke Cage takes down both Big Brother and Cheshire.

Cheshire is one of Luke Cages villains brought together into the group known as Flash Mob.

Who is Mister Sinister?

Mister Sinister is an X-Men villain known for his obsession with Cyclops and Jean Grey.  He has is one of the most gifted acolytes of the mutant Apocalypse.  Mister Sinister has not appeared in the X-Men film's yet but he his hinted as the next villain in X-Men Apocalypse.

Name (Aliases): Nathaniel Essex, Nathan Milbury, Robert Windsor, Mr Sinister, Sinister

First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men #221

Quotes:
"I care enough to wish you and your brothers to be protected from this illness"

Mister Sinister News:

Mister Sinister Multi-Media:

Bio:

Original Unfinished:
Claremont's initial biography was for Mister Sinister to be an extremely slow aging mutant.  He meets cyclops in an orphanage and has the appearance of a 10 year old child but is actually over 50.  Frustrated at not being taken seriously he creates the persona of Mister Sinister.   Mister Sinister is thus the epitome of what a child would find scary.   This biography was never finished due to Claremont leaving X-Men before he could finish it.

Actual:
In 1800 London Nathaniel Essex is one of the preeminent minds in biology along with contemporary Charles Darwin.  Essex begins to see what he calls "Essex Factors" gene leading humanity toward a wave of  powerful mutations.  Essex is eventually shunned by the scientific community for his increasingly extreme beliefs.  Essex decides that if society considers himself a monster than he might as well become one.  He digs up his dead son and begins experimenting on his body.  He also creates a group of extremists called the Marauders.  He begins to craft a belief in enhancing and forcing evolution upon humanity.  The Marauders begin to kidnap homeless people to become test subjects in Essex's increasingly macabre experiments.

Essex is able to trace back the strain of mutation to its base 0 candidate and immortal Egyptian known as En Sabah Nur also as Apocalypse.  The Marauders awaken Nur and bring him to England where he works with Essex to further advance his knowledge of the mutant condition.

Nur and Essex's work would have led to the conquest of England but this is prevented by a time traveling Cyclops and Phoenix.  The two heroes are out to kill Essex to prevent him from becoming Mister Sinister.  They manage to prevent Apocalypse from conquering England but in the process are captured by Apocalypse and are given to Essex for experimentation.  Essex is fascinated by Jean and Cyclops however Jean warns him that his work will lead to the destruction of mankind.  Suddenly, frightened he returns home in the hopes of leaving behind his work.  He finds that his wife has freed all of his prisoners and gone into early labor.  As she dies she denies him forgiveness and says that:

"To me, you are ...utterly...and contemptibly sinister."

With his wife dead, Essex agrees to build a terrible plague for Apocalypse.  Apocalypse remakes Essex giving him advanced healing powers.  The new monstrosity that was Nathanial Essex then decides to call himself Mister Sinister.

While Mister Sinister is one of Apocalypse's longest serving servants he is also one of his most devious.  It is Sinister who seeks a way to kill Apocalypse which he believes can be done through the genetic offspring of Cyclops and Jean Grey.  Ever since capturing the pair in the 1800s Mister Sinister obsesses with the genetic capabilities of Cyclops and Jean Grey.  He creates a clone of Jean Grey called Madelyn Pryor who he ended up breeding with Cyclops.  This leads to the offspring of pair Nathan who is also known as Cable.  In the end Mister Sinister is correct and Cable kills Apocalypse.

Powers:
Through his own and Apocalypses experimental mutations Essex has been altered to have numerous powers.  In one experiment he steals genetic material from the mutant known as the Courier who provides him with cellular level control of his own body.

  • Advanced Healing Factor
  • Longevity - Near immortality
  • Telepathic
  • Telepathy
  • Energy Projection
  • Teleportation - believed to be accomplished through tesseract technology in his home base.

Fox Films

Mister Sinister is thought to be the main villain in the third Wolverine film titled Logan.  In the of the film X-Men Apocalypse it was revealed that Wolverine's blood samples had been acquired by Nathaniel Essex aka Mister Sinister.

In a released photo there is a shadowy figure standing before a sketchy looking motel.  This could be the first image of Mister Sinister in Logan.

Venom is a character in the Marvel Universe who has acted as both a hero and a villain.
Generally, the name Venom refers to anyone wearing the black Venom alien symbiote.

Venom was the primary antagonist of Spider-Man throughout the 90s but has since become a hero.

First Appearance:

Real Name: Eddie Brock (First Venom), Mac Garagan, Flash Thompson

Venom News:

Venom Multi-Media:

Bio:
http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20060119105854/marveldatabase/images/0/08/Amazing_Spider-Man_Vol_1_252.jpg

Originally, the black symbiote was a suit that Spider-Man picked up in Battle World during the Secret Wars special event.   When Spider-Man realized the suit was altering his judgement and making him more violent he separated himself from it.  Since, that time the Symbiote has often joined with men who wanted to battle Spider-Man to match its own feelings of hatred toward him.

The Venom Symbiote was revealed to have been locked away on Battleworld by its own race because it was considered insane by them.  The Symbiote wanted to fully commit to its host and keep them alive where as the rest of the Symbiote simply used up their hosts, killed them and moved onto the next.

http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/3/32405/869126-jlm_julie_20bell_spiderman_vs_venom.jpg

Eddie Brock:
The next man to wear the suit was Eddie Brock.  Eddie Brock was ex-reporter who blamed Spider-Man for losing his job.  Eddie used body building as a method of dealing with his anger and stress though it was largely unsuccessful.  The Symbiote feeling rejected by Spider-Man found a compatriot in Eddie.  The Symbiote was able to give Eddie all of Spider-Man's powers plus extra strength.  Additionally, the Symbiote could get around Spider-Man's spider sense.  The joined together and began calling themselves Venom.

Venom manages to defeat Spider-Man in battle in numerous occasions but never quite manages to kill him.  The symbiote and Eddie evolve as it gains more knowledge.  Eventually, Venom becomes something of a violent vigilante.  Spider-Man and Venom begin finding themselves working together to protect innocent people.  They also unite to fight the evil offspring of Venom, a violent symbiote called Carnage.

Mac Gargan:
Eddie and the Symbiote tire of each other leading the Symbiote to move onto additional hosts.  For a time it uses the former Scorpion, Mac Gargan.  Gargan even poses as a new Spider-Man on Norman Osborn's Dark Avengers team.  Eventually, Gargan is incarcerated and separated from the Symbiote.

Flash Thompson
 http://i.annihil.us/u/prod/marvel/i/mg/3/80/53f25696d4a40.jpg
The former high school bully of Peter Parker, Flash Thompson is the next man to wear the Symbiote.  After highschool Thompson joins the army.  Thompson is badly wounded and paralyzed from the waste down during his military service.  He is recruited into a government black ops unit that seeks a host to use the Venom Symbiote on.

Putting on the Symbiote Thompson not only regains the ability to walk again but also the powers of his former hero Spider-Man.  Thompson's Venom tends to have a more orderly, human appearance than the Gargan/Brock variation.

Venom joins the Guardians of the Galaxy replacing Iron Man as a Earth representative on the team.

Powers:

  • The Symbiote can shape shift and create shapes like spikes.
  • Can alter color, and even be colorless
  • Minor Telepathy which it allows it to communicate with its host.  It can also use this to force and manipulate the host to do things that the Symbiote wants.
  • The Symbiote retains a memory of Spider-Man's powers and is able to give later hosts similar powers.  Wearers of the Symbiote can fire webbings, and swing just like Spider-Man.
  • The Symbiote is also immune to the Spider-Sense ability meaning that Spider-Man must face a stronger version of himself without the use of his extra sense.
  • The Symbiote has also been shown to be immune to certain supernatural forces.
  • Can replicate itself
  • Can track its offspring through a telepathic link

Weaknesses
The Symbiote must generally be attached to a host to survive, though it has been shown to survive on short durations without one.

MCU:

There are a variety of Spider-Man spin-off films that are supposedly in the works.  It is possible they could include Venom in some capacity.

Venom was featured in the non-MCU film Spider-Man 3 and played by actor Topher Grace.  The depiction was not popular with fans.  The poor showing of the character in Spider-Man 3 may lead to hesitation to use the character going forward.   Many fans still clamor for a version of Venom that is closer to his comic depiction.

Bio:
http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/7/73958/3791654-blade_orange_01_1033.jpg

Blade was born in London, England in a brothel.  His mother was a prostitute as she was giving birth a stranger arrived claiming to be a doctor.  The stranger turned out to be a vampire named Deacon Frost.  Deacon attacked and fed on her as she gave birth to Blade.  Vampiric Enzymes from Deacon's bites transferred into the baby and made him into a Dhampir.  A Dhampir is a person who has been effected by a vampire but not fully converted.  Deacon Frost was forced to leave before he could kill the child, but Blade's mother was dead.  As a Dhampir, Blade would learn he would possess some supernatural abilities.  His full powers would not blossom until later, but as Dhampir he had heightened athletic skill, heightened senses, supernatural attraction, and immunity from vampire bites.  Deacon Frost would become one of Blade's most hated and reoccurring villains.

Blade was raised and cared for in the brothel, primarily by its Madame Vanity.  When he was 9 he saw an old man being attacked by vampires and rushed into help him.  The old man was a jazz playing, vampire hunter by the name of Jamal Afari.  Jamal saw the potential of a Dhampir vampire hunter and began to train him in martial arts and vampire hunting.

As teenager Blade rejected the teachings of Afari and took control of a local gang called the Bloodshadows.   Blade drove away the gang's former leader  Cutter and began dating Cutter's ex, a girl named Glory.   The Bloodshadows were attacked by vampire lead by Lamia.  Lamia converted Glory into a vampire.  In a rage Blade killed all of the vampires including Lamia.  He resolved himself that he was destined to battle the Supernatural and returned to the path of vampire hunting.

Blade would later be bitten by the living, vampire Morbius.  The vampire toxin in Morbius's bite added extra powers to Blade.  This gave Blade the full powers of a vampire but none of the weaknesses.  The bite did give Blade the vampiric thirst for human blood which he must battle against.  This effectively turned Blade into his own nightmare, a daywalking vampire.

As an adult Blade had numerous battles of various supernatural entities including vampires, demons and werewolves.  His most prolific adversaries were Deacon Frost and Dracula. He has killed both vampires many times but both find a way to come back.

On a couple of occasions Blade has nearly been successful in wiping out all vampires and supernatural beings.  Once he used a page from the Grimoire the dark hold to gain powers.  Another time he teamed up with Doctor Strange who cast a spell called the Montesi Formula that wiped out vampires.  Other supernatural beings like demons and Marie Laveau were successful in bringing them back.  Marie Laveau working with Victor Strange (Doctor Strange's vampire brother) were successful in bringing back Varnae the original lord of vampires.  Shortly thereafter Dracula is recreated and returns as well.

Blade would join Doctor Voodoo in a battle for control of New Orleans.  Deacon Frost and Marie Laveau had sought to control the city with a horde of powerful zombies.  However, the combination of Blade and Doctor Voodoo were able to thwart them.

Blade would work with Spider-Man to save Morbius and stop a vampire named Henry Sage from developing a day walker serum.  A daywalker serum would allow vampire to eliminate their weakness to the sun, much like Blade.

At some point unknown on his travel Blade fathered a girl named Fallon Grey.  Fallon grew up in Oregon and has become a teenager slayer of supernatural like her father.

Relatives:
Mother - deceased - Murdered giving birth to him by Deacon Frost.
Daughter - Fallon Grey

Powers:
Blade has all the strengths of a vampire but none of the weaknesses.  He can walk out in the sunlight, swim in holy water and eat Garlic.  Blade does have the thirst for human blood.
  • Super Strength
  • Super Speed
  • Super Agility
  • Immunity to vampire powers of hypnotism and bites

Blade is a highly skilled martial artist, fighter, and is an expert in the supernatural.

Blade also hates the supernatural world and blames it for many of his problems and losses.  He hunts and kills with a vengeance that can even terrify his allies.  The fury with which he takes down supernatural creatures is driving force all its own and is comparable to that of the Punisher.

Blade in Film and MCU:
http://nerdreactor.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Blade1.jpg

Blade was depicted 3 times by Wesley Snipes in a successful trilogy of action horror films.  Marvel has recently (2014) re-acquired the rights to Blade.

MCU:
Snipes has said he has some meetings with Marvel over the potential of playing the character again.  Nothing official has been said about this by Marvel yet.   The picture has been speculated to focus on Blade's daughter Fallon Grey.

In an interview with Huffington post Wesley Snipes made the following comments about reprising his role as Blade and confirming he has been in

“There’s always a possibility, you know,” ... “It’s in Marvel’s hands. They’re controlling the pace and the flow with that. Conversations have been good. They see the value in it. We see the value in it.”
“I’m still in shape enough and fit enough to handle the role,  We’ll see how it goes. I don’t really know what’s going to happen to it yet.”
“That would be interesting,” he said when asked whether or not he would be interested in teaming up with The Avengers. “I mean, I know it’s in the comic book. It would be interesting to see where they would place him and where he really would fit in. He’s got to bite somebody. I don’t know who he’s going to bite.”
Rumors are that the Blade movie could features Blade's daughter named Fallon Grey.  Fallon Grey has her own comic appearing in Oct 2015 called Blade the Hunter.

Update June 2016
The Fall Grey rumors seemed to be putting the cart infront of the horse.  The comic series featuring Fallon Grey has never materialized and niether has word on a Blade film/TV Series.

At NYCC 10/9/2016
Kate Beckinsale mentioned there were plans to have a Underworld and Blade crossover but the plans were dropped after Marvel Studios said they had plans for the character.

Kevin Feige executive at Marvel Studios was then asked at a Doctor Strange panel if there were upcoming plans for the character.  Feige responded:

"They did ask a long time ago and I think our answer was, ‘No, we’ll do something with ‘Blade’ at some point.’ That’s still the answer. We still think he’s a great character. He’s a really fun character. We think this movie going into a different side of the universe would have the potential to have him pop up, but between the movies, the Netflix shows, the ABC shows there are so many opportunities for the character to pop up as you’re now seeing with Ghost Rider on ‘AGENTS of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ that rather than team up with another studio on that character let’s do something on our own. What that is? Where that will be? We’ll see. There is nothing imminent to my knowledge."

Agents of SHIELD Blackout episode was very thrilling. The show pulled out alot of stops to create a fast paced and intense episode that some how pulled many of the threads together. The show is really doing well integrating Ghost Rider with the other characters. My hope is that it is also reflected in the shows ratings.

My one beef right now with the show is that I still feel like they need to getting better villains. Hopefully, who ever is pulling the strings of the watch dogs is someone interesting.

Sir Kent Review of the previous episode The Ghost

As you can tell by the gif, this week's episode of AOS made me drink. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.

Now, like I do with most of my reviews, let's dig into what I DID NOT LIKE. This new Director thing bugs me. Where did this guy come from and how the f'BEEP could they ever pass over Agent Maria Hill as the new director?!?! I SAY THEE NAY! (Like how I worked in  some Asgardian?) I mean other than Hawkeye and The Black Widow, she has been by director Fury's side from the start! Nobody can replicate that kind of experience.

SERIOUSLY? Did Nick Fury have no say in who filled the void??? And so now Coulson is just a VERY senior field agent? Not even the right hand of this new, pretty-boy director? If Hill comes back as a f'BEEPin’ villian because of this, they f'BEEPin’ deserve it!

In all of this, the one person I TRULY DO NOT envy is Jemma. Her heart was in the right place grabbing at a position that would allow her some sway over this new version of SHIELD. However I kinda think she got it because this new director doesn't see her as a threat. Plus, how f'BEEPin’ long do you think May is going to continue to take orders from her before she reminds her who the Hell she's talking to? Okay, I think I'm done with dislikes.

What I did like about last night's episode? Let's take it from the top. Best line

Coulson - Look forward to seeing May

Mack - I think you look more forward to it more than I do

On Yo-Yo.  I did not know if this character would be brought back or not.
Seeing Yo-Yo again was nice. Seeing how hot she is for Mack was VERY nice! I do love an aggressive woman and she is going to shag the living shit out of Mack!  She adds some personal relationships with Mack and is also in a interesting position as a go between with Quake/Daisy and the rest of her former team.

Secrets  and Rules to Keep Secrets
To Hell with the rules! It's unfortunate that the agency tends to force you to keep secrets from loved ones. Poor Fitz having to keep the secret of this new AIDA cyborg from Simmons is killing him. He just needs more time to see it finished and maybe field tested. I must go in record now and say, Am I the ONLY person who See's “Ultron: Attack of the sexy cyborgs” happening here? Do the math.

She was created by Radcliffe as a means to save lives by “Mimicking” humans in order to protect them. That as sounds great. Probably will go great the first few times. But what's to keep her from one day “Mimicking” a human's desire to survive? Then in the heat of battle being all like “F'BEEP YO’ COUCH, EDDIE MURPHY!

I ain't goin’ out like that!”? Ultron, all over again, only sexy. I sayeth woe be that day indeed. (More Asgardian for you I am really getting ready Thor Ragnarok).

FINALLY,......give me a drum roll................

The Ghost Rider entrance.......went off like BOOM!!!!!

I have to say, much like a lot of you, I had a serious concern about how on a T.V. budget, they would make Ghost Rider look convincing. This new version of  The Rider with the car instead if the motorcycle just seems to fit. His transformation into The Rider was done very well. The only thing that was missing was his chain. Which I'm sure we will see soon enough.

I am curious to see what it is in this box he is hunting. The gun running repu...I meant white supremacist are a happy by-product of what The Rider is truly after. Whatever was let out of that box is of a supernatural basis and he knows he has to kill it. Unfortunately for everyone at SHIELD base, it seems to have gotten a hold of May. And THAT could only mean they are in for a very bad day! If she turns on the SHIELD crew due to this ghost box then all hell is going to break loose!

All in all, I look forward to meeting this new director. Hopefully having him killed off (By a possessed May) and finding out exactly what this evil spirit is.

Plus WHERE THE HELL IS DEATHLOK??? Ghost Rider vs Deathlok would be something I would love to see.

Code-a-Pillar the Coding Caterpillar by Fisher Price

Coding Caterpillar or Code-A-Pillar by Fisher Price is Toylab's Top Christmas Toy of 2016

Fisher Price has a new toy that is geared toward toddlers.  It is on its face a really simple robot but if you look closely it offers a great deal of depth.   It is a toy that will delight toddlers, but may also be used by older kids and even adults.  When a toy can intrigue all people it has the possibility of being much more that it was initially intended.
I have seen highschool teams work with robotics doing similar tasks that are now being done by 4 year olds with the Code-A-Pillar.  The high school robots were just harder to use and figure out.  This robot is elegantly, simple and it is that simplicity that makes it a thing of beauty.

How does Code-A-Pillar work?

The Code-A-Pillar is a toy that is broken up into segmented pieces that click together.  Each piece is snapped into each other easily through an attached USB connection.  Each segment has a symbol on it showing an action like Turn Left, Go Forward, Make Noise.  When the Code-A-Pillar is turned on it lights up happily and then runs through the sequence of actions laid out in the segments of the Code-A-Pillar.  Kids can begin playing and experimenting with the sequence of the segments to make the toy do different things or at least in a different sequence.

By putting the segments in different sequences the kids can begin undertaking little challenges like making the Code-A-Pillar cross a mapped out path, or go around obstacles.  When kids master this there is a App that can add additional tasks and options.
There will also be expansion packs that will have all kinds of new things for the Code-A-Pillar to do.

What makes it really awesome is what it teaches - CODING
The secret sauce of this toy is that it teaches CODING!
One of the missions of Toylab is to help people from all walks of life how to code or do basic programming.  The reasons for this are legion.  Understanding how computer code works unlocks doors in every industry today.  It is very empowering to program a machine to do something very
efficiently and save you time.  While coding is something that is nice to have for my generation, it is going to be seen as an outright requirement for future generations.

The American Education in Coding is woefully unprepared for the future.

This may sound crazy but if I had my way, kids would be spending an equal amount of time learning programming as they spend on Science, English and Math.  It should be treated like a new core class.  Schools however are not treating it that way.  Kids are very lucky if they get 2 classes that cover basic computer skills and often one of those is simply keyboarding.  This does nothing to teach a kid programming, 3d Modeling, Website Design, 3d Printing or the myriad of other computer technologies.  If you want your kids to learn coding you need to be the one to introduce it to them.  The Code-A-Pillar is a great first step in this direction.

The best part of Code-A-Pillar is that your kids will begin learning a very USEFUL skill but do it while playing and having fun.   The Code-A-Pillar is also such a great toy that they are going to want to play with it, and explore how to use it.  Further there are ways by using crafts, additional segment parts to increase the amount of exploration they can do with this toy.

I Love this toy!  It is a beautiful design and a revolutionary simple idea made fun.

Positives:
  • Easy to use and figure out
  • Teaches Coding
  • Parts are easily handled by a Toddler
  • Parts stay together and don't fall out easily
  • Putting pieces together is pretty easily
  • $50 Dollars is approximate starting set price and seems very reasonable

Downsides
I love this toy but there are some things to think about to take into account.

  • The Code-A-Pillar makes a lot of noise which can drive parents nuts.  I do not see an option to turn the volume off.
  • It does best on a flat hard surface (Tile or Hardwood floors are the best).  It can work on thin carpet but a thicker carpet it will often get stuck.
  • It does better when you have a descent amount of space.  If you don't have a lot of space it could be a struggle for you child to use it.

Sigourney Weaver playing Marvel Villain?

$

0

Sigourney Weaver has been revealed to having a major role in the upcoming Marvel Netflix Series The Defenders. The Defenders combines the characters Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Daredevil against a major threat. What is the major threat? Seems like that threat whatever it is will be played by Sigourney Weaver.

The only part of her role that has been revealed is that it will be "Significant". To me that means she will be a major villain. Lets face it the major hero roles have been taken. Earlier in the year it was suggested that the demonic character known as Mephisto could be the major villain behind the unification of the Defenders. If this is true then it possible that she is playing the iconic villain that is heavily based on the Bible's Devil.

Mephisto in the comics has generally been portrayed as a male. However, being that he is a demon he can appear however he wants and is not constrained by gender. Also Marvel has often taken alternative takes on its film characters.

From Marvel.com: “Marvel is honored to have an actress of her caliber and status join what is already our biggest show ever! She is by definition a class act,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television.

Sigourney Weaver is a Golden Globe winning, Oscar and Emmy nominated actress and everyone should be excited for what role will be. Sigourney sent tongues wagging earlier in the month when she revealed she had been watching all of the Marvel films to study for a future role. She refused to say what exactly she was watching the MCU films for.

What ever Sigourney's role is sure that she will play a great villain and we are excited to see what comes of this.

What role do you think Sigourney will take on?  I'd love to hear from you in the comics.

First looks at Aquaman and Mera

I haven't done too much coverage of Dawn of Justice yet.  Some of the pictures coming out of Zach Snyder's twitter feed are very impressive though.

Aquaman Legos - Black Manta Deep Strike

The one that honestly makes me step back the most is this one of Aquaman.  Momoa looks pretty damn intimidating as Aquaman.  I would not call this an entirely revision of the character as he has appeared pretty grissely in some of the comics.  He looks pretty dark here and  I am not refering to his skin or hair color.   Aquaman's general look is clean shaven, bright orange, with bright green, his hair is bright blonde and that tends to give him a happier and lighter image than say Batman.  Here there is no bright orange, he is wearing darkened metal, with darkened trident.  His body is covered with these bad-ass maori tattoos.  The white in his beard actually seems to add grisslyness of him.   When Aquaman is this dark, it really tells me that the tone of this thing is going to be very dark indeed.

The Batman Dark Knight vibe is going to set the tone for the DC universe.  This could be a good way for them to differentiate between Marvel and their own TV-Universe.

What do you think:

Aquaman picture from Zach Snyder

View image on Twitter

There are some similarities here to the Aquaman of the late 90s:  Whats amazing is that the Aquaman from Dawn Justice looks darker even without the harpoon hand.

They definitely both a grisled, no nonsense look.  I was a fan of this iteration of Aquaman in comic form and am a huge fan of Momoa from his work on Game of Thrones.  I am very excited to see Aquaman.

There are also new pictures of Amber Heard as Mera:

She looks a little more Alantean than Momoa's Aquaman.  This look is very similar to comic versions and I think looks great.

Star Wars Rogue One film - News, Art, Trailers and Casting

Rogue One is a stand alone film set in the Star Wars universe that focuses on a group of rebels who steal the plans for the Deathstar.  The film is said to have a darker and more militarized tone than its Star Wars peers.  The film is a one shot and does not have any planned sequels.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer #2

This really feels like a Sam Adams rebellion fomenting movie and I dig it.

Trailer 2 released at 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio:

Darth Vader, seen here in the new Rogue One trailer.

Despite whatever issues have caused reshoots to happen the film's trailers are showing no problems.  Many are saying they like the Rogue One trailer more than the Force Awakens trailer.

This trailer highlights many more of the ragtag band like Donnie Yen's character Chirrut Imwe.  Chirrut is a blind warrior who seems to be able to feel the Force.   There are scenes that focus on Diego Luna's and Forrest Whitaker's character.   Also a general reveal of the time with the empire expanding all over the galaxy.

What will likely cause the most tongues to wag though is a brief glimpse of Darth Vader.  Another international version of the Trailer was also released.

Official Synopsis:
From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016.

A further description is provided in a press release by Kathleen Kennedy
“Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,”...  “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth Edwards is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for Rogue One.”
Cast:
Felicity Jones
Diego Luna
Ben Mendelsohn
Donnie Yen
Jiang Wen
Forest Whitaker
Mads Mikkelsen
Alan Tudyk
Riz Ahmed

Problems and Reshoots:
6-7-2016 Latino Review has revealed that the film is undergoing extensive reshoots with a new director.   The studio initially said that the reshoots were to add in scenes surrounding a major character.   However, sources for Latino Review state that up to 50 percent of the film could be up for reshots an extremely large amount of film given its release date in 6 months.

Is interesting that director Gareth Edwards is not involved with the reshoots.  Unconfirmed rumors have said he is livid about the reshoots.

This could simply be Disney being extremely protective of its Star wars license and not want anything less than the best to be released.   For many fans though there is a worry that the film will plagued by similar issues as those that befell the distarous Fantastic Four.

One report from a reddit user named KeepR1dark claims to have inside information and says reshoots are because Disney feels the film is too dark and scary for children.   The primary reshoots according KeepR1dark are from a scene where Darth Vader brutally terrors through a Rebel unit.   The scene was meant to horror elements to emphasize Vaders badness.

KeepR1dark Quote-
In a night scene Vader absolutely lays waste to a Rebel ground Squad.  Unfortunately this is one of the scenes we need to water down.   We made it like something from the old slasher/horror films.    Rebel soldiers who joked about a boogie man with magical powers and then minutes later are absolutely wasted.
There is actually a scene much like this in the comic Vader Down.   I'm not sure I'd either influenced the other but it is possible.  The Vader Down comic chronologically takes place at a different time after New Hope IV.

Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy

What is Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy?

Dead No More: The Clone Conspiracy is a Spider-Man story written by Dan Slott that is set to be released in the fall of 2016.  It features the return of Spider-Man's infamous villain Miles Warren aka the Jackal. The Jackal is infamous for being the primary villain in what is often regarded as the worst Spider-Man story ever, Maximum Clonage.

In the Clone Conspiracy the Jackal will have learned how to bring people back to life. Apparently, this goes beyond creating clones and actually fully bringing back the actual person.   He will then use this ability to coerce super villains who have lost loved ones to work for him. Many supervillains have lost loved ones, many super villains themselves have also been killed. The Jackal thus has the ability to create a super villain army that is entirely loyal to him.

It also seems that the Jackal does not necessarily intend to battle Peter Parker but instead to make a deal with him. There are after all a multitude of dead characters that Parker would want returned to life.

Series Checklist:
Here is the official The Clone Conspiracy Checklist

Toylab Editorial:

Ny immediate thought when hearing about this story was,  "Oh this is going to be rad!" but my 2nd reaction was one of worry..  First I am really looking forward to this it and I think its going to be excellent.  However, as soon as you mention Clones and Spider-Man in the same sentence a billion pound Elephant walks into the room.  Lets get this elephant out of the way.

Meet THE ELEPHANT in the ROOM CLONES CLONES CLONES
Before we go into the Clone Conspiracy lets discuss why Clones are a such loaded word for Spider-Man fans.

The Jackal has appeared prominently in two Spider-Man stories both involving clones. The first story was received fairly positively and does not have any of the negative baggage of the first. In this story the Jackal making a clone of Gwen Stacey and later of Spider-Man himself. This was used as a means of torturing Spider-Man. The Jackal blames Spider-Man for Gwen Stacey's death. The Jackal made a few successful clones of Spider-Man but only one was perfect. The very first clone had degenerative issues and went off on his own and was later known by the name Kaine. Spider-Man and the perfect clone battled each other in a stadium. The battle was stopped when the clone of Gwen Stacey unmasked the Jackal as Professor Miles Warren and took him to task for his crimes. In the fray a bomb explodes and the perfect clone, Gwen Stacey clone and the Jackal are all apparently killed.  In true comic book fashion almost none of them died.

The 2nd story is the much maligned Clone Saga. This story was met with a huge fan backlash when it attempted to say that Spider-Man was actually the clone.  Meanwhile, the real Spider-Man had believed he was the clone and went off to start a new live as Ben Reilly. This had some very dramatic underpinnings it meant that Mary Jane had married the clone, and also was pregnant with its baby. It also meant that the character that everyone had been reading since the original Clone story had been an impostor. Effectively 20 years of Spider-Man comics had starred the clone impostor and not the real Spider-Man. Fans were seriously enraged at the thought of this and rebelled against the story. The story's creative team underwent a variety of changes but generally they remained defiant and pushed back against the fans. The Clone Saga would go on in various forms for nearly 3 YEARS!!! On top of fans hating the idea of Parker being a clone, the story is also a big discombobulated mess. I have many of the issues and have tried to make sense of it for years. I may be the only idiot on the planet who has read it multiple times and knows useless facts that for instance Miles Warren's Jackal is not the true villain of the series, its actually......Norman Osborn. By the point this was revealed no one cared or even understood it.  It sort of hits the floor like a lead balloon.

Is Clone Sage better on a reread?  Answer - Yes and No. When you reread the Clone Saga you realize that there are good parts that have been overlooked. First there are some good individual issues. There are some cool new characters like Kaine and Ben Reilly that are introduced. The cover art for the series is really cool and unlike anything that is coming out now.
The biggest reason to reread the Clone Saga though is the themes of the story itself. When you look back this was also one of the most mature Spider-Man stories ever written. This is Parker facing marriage and fatherhood at the same time he learns that he may be a clone. At the time fans hated it because it felt like Peter's entire evolution as a person was being unraveled. When you read it now this is Peter Parker as a man, not as a boy going through something very traumatic. After the events of Brand New Day its clear that Parker is going to be kept at a stage of lower maturity than this. He will likely never be married, never have kids, he will forever be bouncing around sjuggling girl friends, work with his alter ego as Spider-Man. Reading this old story and seeing how different and how adult Parker is very unique.  It makes you feel like you are reading a tale of What If, or a great fan fiction. The Maximum Clonage story remains one of the few places where you can get this adult Peter Parker and that for me will always make the story stand out as something important.

Once the burns of Parker being clone went away and eventually were rewritten out of existence. The last big problem with Maximum Clonage is its organization. This story is a hot mess. There are parts of the story that seem contradict themselves  There are subplots that never seem to go anywhere. Its really hard to untangle where something begins and ends. The sheer volume of material in the story and its sub-stories also drag on and on making it a total bear to try to read through appropriately. This problem will never go away.  It remains an organizational cluster bomb.

That said you can find some of these same organizational issues with the previous Spider-Man story  Maximum Carnage that is looked at far more positively. I think though that Maximum Carnage gets away with it because on its face its so much simpler. Its mostly about a group of good guys fighting a group of bad guys in a city in chaos. All the drama and mystery underpinnings of Maximum Clonage are not there and thus it is less important to read all of the issues or to read them in a specific order.  I have not read the attempt to put Maximum Clonage together as a Trade Paperback as a kind of master cut.  Its actually hard for me to imagine how that is done with how many issues are being dealt with. I do however know that it does exist.  Maybe someday I will read it and compare it to all of the comics.  Who knows maybe this new Clone story will inspire me.

Looking at the Clone Conspiracy

Am I worried about the legacy of Maximum Clonage affecting the Clone Conspiracy? No, because Brand New Day pretty much fully unraveled the Spider-Man continuity. Spider-Verse also showed that continuity in terms of Spider-Man is almost pointless because there are a billion different dimensions and somewhere the Spider-Man that is married and has kids exists. He is just not that much fun so Marvel won't focus on him. All of the baggage Maximum Clonage carried is thus kind of passed by most Spider-Man fans at this point and what remains is purely a focus on the story and characters.

The other enduring problem of Maximum Clonage being its utter lack of organization I highly doubt will infect this new series. The reason I am confident that organization will not be a problem is Dan Slott. Slott has proven himself as a master weaver of Spider-Man events. He has successfully navigated webhead through Spider-Verse, Spider-Island, Secret Wars (The 2nd One), and of course Superior Spider-Man. All of those stories were well written and set up to be easy followed. They did not contract themselves but all followed the same thought issue to issue. Everything tells me that this story will be like that.

My expectations for this story are very high. I think its going to take Spider-Man to new places and do things that no one expects. While many including myself used to think that Spider-Verse was Slott's Magnum Opus we may have been wrong. This could very well be it. Be excited TRUE BELIEVERS this is going to be good.

Review of Watchmen by Sir Kent

Review of Watchmen by Sir Kent as part of series on Guilty Pleasures

In these times of the debate over not only should movies based on comic books be rated R but, if so, how “Adult” should they be? I thought I would use a movie that I actually love and own but received mixed reactions from fans and critic's. Of course, I picked this movie as well because it was directed by one of the most polarizing directors of all time! According to your comments regarding my last
GUILTY PLEASURE post. Welcome to the third installment and this week's GUILTY PLEASURE movie will be

    THE WATCHMEN

The Watchmen were created in 1986 by
Allan Moore who, if you know anything about his work, absolutely LOVE'S tackling issues that make people uncomfortable. (This is the same guy who wrote The Killing Joke.) He came up with the idea of The Watchmen because he wanted to write about what would happen in society if there were actual superheroes among us. Even their name, loosely translated from Latin means “Who watches The Watchmen?”. He also had certain political aspects for writing this series as well that, I don't care to address.

When he started out, luck wasn't in his side. He wanted to use characters from MLJ COMICS but they were all like “F'Beep NO! This shBeep is too dark!” Then he wanted to use characters from
CHARLTON COMICS but guess what? D.C. had just bought them and were about to use a lot of the characters in their main continuity! So they were all like “EAT A DICK!” So finally Moore said “FBeep THIS SHIT Beep! If I can't use these characters, I will create characters based on them.”

As you ALL know, this happens A LOT in the world of comics. Where a writer or creator will create a character VERY similar to another companies. Moore wasn't the first but, he admittedly followed in the footsteps of others. In case you're wondering, these characters are

    Ozymandias-Thunderbolt
    The Comedian-The Peacemaker
    Silk Spectre 2-Nightshade
    Dr. Manhattan-Captain Atom
    Rorschach-The Question
    Night Owl-The Blue Beetle

The big screen adaptation that came out in 2009 was directed by then, much embattled
Zack Snyder. (I can hear you f Beepin’ HATER'S out there screaming “C’MON MAN!”). I say “Embattled” because, this was after he did a reboot of DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004) and 300 (2006). Both of which received praise and MUCH hate! Some people even said that he didn't deserve to be trusted with another big budget film.

The Watchmen told the story of a group of hero’s that were set in an alternate 80’s Universe. A time when the world was on the brink of nuclear war and society was calling for a superhero registry. For no matter how much good they did, most still had a problem with hero's operating outside the law (Who watches The Watchmen?). ESPECIALLY when, even though most of them had no powers, the one that did, Dr. Manhattan (Played by
    Billy Crudup) was nearly all-powerful.
Dr. Manhattan can become intangible, control his size, has thought control, can teleport, survive the vacuum of space, can control all matter oh, and did I mention MAKE PEOPLE EXPLODE WITH A SNAP OF HIS FINGERS???

He was the only member of the group that had actual super powers but, rarely used them. The other members of the group were seen as killers just as much as they were hero's. Let's start with the person this dark and bloody tale revolves around. The Comedian (Played wonderfully by
Jeffery Dean Morgan) is a Vietnam Vet who should be locked up for war crimes? “Why” you may ask? Well other than happily admitting that he killed women and children during the war, he was a rapist and complete psychopath as well!

So OF COURSE he would be GREAT for carrying out government sanctioned black ops. Remember how some people say there was a second shooter at the JFK assassination? The Comedian saw the world as one big joke and his actions to be the punchline. However, he did stumble upon a plan that was so diabolical that it brought even his twisted soul to tears. It also brought on his murder.

Which in turn brought in an investigation by fellow Watchmen
Rorschach (Played by Jackie Earle Haley). Rorschach was a brilliant detective, boxer,
street-brawler and borderline psychopath. He ONLY saw the world in black and white and if you crossed him, you could easily end up thrown out a window, down an elevator shaft or hacked to death with a meat cleaver! He's not AS bad as
The Comedian but, he's zip code is adjacent. I am going to yell SPOILER ALERT now.

Even though this movie is 7 year's old, a few of you may not have seen it so skip this next  few paragraphs.

In the movie, a little girl is kidnapped, raped, killed and fed to some dog's. Rorschach trace's this muthufBeepa to his house where he finds the poor little girls underwear and then bits of her clothing in the yard by the dog's. He kill's the dog's and waits for this F'Beepin’ F'beeper to get home. He then disarms him, whoops his ass and cuff's him to his oven. The guy confesses and asks to be taken in.

Instead, Rorschach grabs a nearby meat cleaver and reduces the guy's skull to hamburger! I can clearly remember cheering when this happened in the theater and this brings me to the deeper point of such movies that shine a light in society as a whole. There are just certain people who, through their actions don't deserve to live. No life sentence, no lethal injection, just a trail and a horrible death. Should movies like this address such things? Should a movie based in a comic have such mature tones?

OKAY. YOU CAN START READING FROM HERE

During his investigation, Rorschach discovers a plan that not only plans to kill off all current hero's but discredit former hero's as well. However, that is just the start. As the story rolls on, it is discovered that this plan also involves driving
Dr. Manhattan from the planet, using his powers as a means to carry out this diabolical plan AND set him up for the entire thing! Now THAT'S what I call a “BALLA” plan!

With the exception of Dr. Manhattan 4 out of the 6 members of this team have ABSOLUTELY NO BUSINESS running around fighting the good fight! But this also begs the question, is our perception of hero's TOO good? Have we just come to expect them to always take the high ground and do the right thing? Is that even possible in the world anymore? That's why I personally say that there is definitely a market for movies like this.

Maybe Zack Snyder is one of the few directors who can currently put an adult spin on movies like this. Maybe he sees something that is needed in these reimaginings. I believe that adults can identify, discuss and agree with a lot of the visceral brutally that happens in this movie. So what are your thoughts? Will the debate over R-Rated movies rage on or, thanks to the success of The Watchmen and recently Deadpool, have they become the norm? How far should they go?
