As posted on their website Disney has purchased Fox's movie divisions and a variety of licenses and properties.  Disney now also has a majority stake in the streaming service Hulu.

Highlights of the deal:

21st Century Fox to spin off Fox Broadcasting network and stations, Fox News, Fox Business, FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network to its shareholders
  • Acquisition complements and enhances The Walt Disney Company’s ability to provide consumers around the world with more appealing content and entertainment options
  • Transaction to include 21st Century Fox’s film and television studios, cable entertainment networks and international TV businesses
  • Popular entertainment properties including X-Men, Avatar, The Simpsons, FX Networks and National Geographic to join Disney’s portfolio
  • Expands Disney’s direct-to-consumer offerings with addition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment content, capabilities in the Americas, Europe and Asia; Hulu stake becomes a controlling interest
  • Addition of extensive international properties, including Star in India and Fox’s 39% ownership of Sky across Europe, enhances Disney’s position as a truly global entertainment company with world-class offerings in key regions
  • Robert A. Iger to remain Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company through 2021
Disney's goal is to create a streaming service of its own and this deal greatly adds to its content by uniting the major Marvel licenses of the X-Men, Deadpool and Fantastic Four with their MCU bretheren and adding other major licenses like Avatar, and The Simpsons to Disney already full stable.

It is interesting now to take stock of what Disney owns from a comic shop perspective:

Marvel Comics - Owns everything now except the Spider-Man film rights that belong Sony.
CrossGen Comics- Fully owned by Disney
Disney Character Comics - Fully owned by Disney
Star Wars Comics- Fully Owned by Disney
Avatar Comics - Fully Owned by Disney
Simpsons Comics - Fully Owned by Disney

If you imagine a shelf those things above amount to a lot of shelf space. Its even more impressive when you consider that Disney has these rights for film, for TV and for other merchandise.

Some Marvel fans are concerned about the potential impact for Deadpool and X-Force within the X-Franchise.  Despite the concern Ryan Reynolds who plays Deadpool responded to the news of the deal with this amusing tweet.

What do you think of the deal?  How do you think it will impact Marvel comics going forward?
