Pokemon Go! Update Information:
This post is to track major updates to the Pokemon Go app. The game is new and is off to a massive start. Niantic though has mentioned that they have come across a few things they want to tweak and also some major things they want to add to the game. Some of their ideas mentioned at San Diego Comic Con 2016 by Niantic include an ability to upgrade Pokestops, a Pokemon transferring system, and person to person battling. They also revealed artwork of the three leaders of the different teams and promised to add meaningful aspects to the game around teams.
10-19-2017 - Gen 3 and Beyond....
Niantic has added in all of the Gen 3 Pokemon. Some will begin appearing as soon as the Halloween event in Oct 2017.
In addition to this John Hanke the CEO of Niantic has said that a new PvP Battle will appear next year along with a new social system.
It remains to be seen if these updates will be enough to re-engerize the fan base that has been steadily declining but is still quite large.
Pokemon Go Fest and Legendary Raids:
Legendary Raids will debut in Pokemon Go. There will be a new type of Raid Pass called a Legendary Raid pass.
On July 23, Pokemon Go players will be congregating in Chicago for Pokemon Go Fest. At Pokemon Go Fest the players will be able to take part in the first Legendary Raid. The players there will need to complete various challenges. From what I have heard the players there will need to catch a certain amount of Pokemon that day to qualify for the Legendary Raid. Then if players in Chicago manage to catch the Legendary Pokemon that same Legendary Raid will begin appearing throughout local gyms across the world.
Niantic is trying to balance the hardcore players going to Chicago with everyone else. Thus challenges throughout the world will exist that day that will help out the players in GoFest. In turn if the players at GoFest are successful there will be rewards for everyone throughout the world. Instead, of making one group have an advantage the developers are trying to create a symbiotic / team base relationship.
I have never seen an attempt to do anything like this with any game, EVER. This really is historical even if you are not a Pokemon Go fan you have to sit back and smile.
New Battling System is HERE
The gyms temporarily closed to make way for a new Pokemon Go Battle System!
Gyms will now be changed in the following ways:
1) Will be able to get items from gyms like Pokestops
2) Will get bonuses if in control of gyms
3) Max defenders in a gym is maxxed out at 6 down from 10
4) Attackers can use 6 pokemon
5) Multiple people can attack gyms at the same time
6) The more a pokemon loses battles the more it will lose motivation once motivation is 0 it will leave gym.
7) Motivation can be increased by feeding your pokemon berries
8) Attacking and beating a pokemon will decrease its Motivation
9) PokeCoins will be rewarded when the defender returns from the gym. Not during.
10) Only one of each type of Pokemon can be added to a gym (No More Blissey Bastilles).
11) TMs!!!!!!! Pokemon Go will be adding TMs. TMs stands for Technical Machines these were special items in older games that when used added new moves (New Attacks) to a pokemon. It sounds that they will work similary in Pokemon Go but instead of adding a specific move, they will refresh you Pokemon's moves based off its available moves. If you do not like the moves it lands on, you can use another TM. I am not sure at this point how TMs will be recieved. My guess is you will get them from Pokestops and they will be rare.
Using a TM will allow re-assigning a Pokemon's movesets randomly. If you don't like the resulting moves, try another TM on the same Pokemon.— The Silph Road (@TheSilphRoad) June 19, 2017
The biggest update to Pokémon GO is almost here. Learn more about the Gym and Raid Battle features coming your way! https://t.co/zknoYrqUeipic.twitter.com/BaU9hF4P97— Pokémon GO (@PokemonGoApp) June 19, 2017
The system should also allow for huge crowd raids where thousands of people attack a gym at once.
6/8/2017 Fire and Ice Event?

The Fire and Ice Event has been confirmed by the Silph Road which I consider to be a great source for Pokemon Go Info:
IT'S HAPPENING! First official details on real-world events, the Fire/Ice event, and gyms to close before upgrades: https://t.co/0R64diPQzV— The Silph Road (@TheSilphRoad) June 8, 2017
Egg hatches are reportedly awarding 5 TIMES normal XP awards! (That is not a typo, travelers!)— The Silph Road (@TheSilphRoad) June 13, 2017
The #PokemonGO Solstice Celebration starts now! For a limited time, encounter more Fire-type and Ice-type Pokémon as you explore the world!— Pokémon GO (@PokemonGoApp) June 13, 2017
There was a recent update to the app but it looked like it was mostly bug fixes and nothing very exciting. There is also rumor but from a descent source that the next Pokemon Go event will be based around Fire and Ice Pokemon. The event will feature a lot of Fire and Ice Pokemon plus a couple of extra cool things. Will Lapras spawns go up? Please Please!
- Featured of Fire and Ice.
- Increase Spawn Rate of Fire Pokemon
- Increase Spawn Rate of Ice Pokemon
- 50 % Lucky Eggs
- Double Xp on Throws
- 5 x Egg hatch XP award.
5/25/2017 - Legendary Pokemon Incoming?
Adventure Week is over now its time for LEGENDARY

The Global Marketing Lead from Niantic accepted an award from the Webbys. An acceptance speech there must be limited to 5 words and these were the words he chose.
"This Summer will be Legendary"
This certainly seems to be a strong hint that Niantic plans to release at least some of the Legendary Pokemon this summer.
Update 5/17/2017 - Adventure Week
The Grass Event was kind of a mini event to keep things interesting and it looks like Adventure Week is going to be the main event of the month. Some are speculating that this will be the last event before Raid events. I am not so sure the Raid events could take a while to set up.
Lets talk Adventure Week (Great name!)
The event goes from Thursday May 18th through May 25th (PDT 1 pm).
- The event will increase the spawn rates of Rock Pokemon including Sudowudo, Onix, Kabuto, Omanyte, Aerodactyl and also Larvitar.
- There should be increases in Candy for walking the Buddy
- More items from PokeStop spins
- A Free Explorer hat in the store
- And additional items in the store.
Toylab bloggers will snap some pictures this week and have slide show up of our Adventure Week on our Instagram so check that out! Until then enjoy your own adventure!
Update -5/5/2017 Grass Poolza

Pokemon Go is going to feature a mini event over the weekend in which Grass Pokemon are more abundant and that Lures will last a full 6 hours long. 6 HOURS. The event is being called the World Wide Bloom and also Grass Weekend.
Announcement:
Professor Willow's research into Pokémon habitats around the world has uncovered some interesting findings. His initial reports indicate that we’ll see an influx of Grass-type Pokémon sometime this weekend. These Pokémon will appear in the wild more frequently starting the afternoon of May 5, but only for a short period of time. We anticipate that Pokémon will return to their normal habitats on May 8, 2017 PDT.
What will happen during World Wide Bloom:
- Event will last May 5 - May 8
- Grass Pokemon - Increase in spawn rate
- Lures will last 6 hours
There are no known increases to star dust or candy, no new features, no new pokemon, no sales in the store. This seems to be a new style event for Pokemon Go where it is a micro event. This should still be fun I need some grass Pokemon so I am pumped.
Some people also think that the Bulbasaur above looks like a Shiny Bulbasaur and that there may be an increase in Shiny pokemon. First off I don't think that Bulbasaur looks shiny and 2nd off I have read no legitmate sources that say anything about a Shiny connection. So I think that is just a rumor sorry because a bunch of shiny grass Pokemon would be very cool.
Grass Pokemon to hunt for:

- Bulbasaur
- Ivysaur
- Venusaur
- Oddish
- Gloom
- Vileplume
- Bellossom
- Paras
- Parasect
- Bellsprout
- Weepinbell
- Victreebel
- Exeggcute
- Exeggutor
- Tangela
- Chikorita
- Bayleef
- Meganium
- Hoppip
- Skiploom
- Jumpluff
- Sunkern
- Sunflora
Update - 4/13
Easter Event - its an Eggstraganza!

The Pokemon Go Easter Event will begin 1 pm Eastern Time on 4 /13 and it will go through 4/20 at 1 pm.
The event will include an increased amount of Pokemon that can hatch from 2k eggs (Hopefully reall good ones!)
Increased candy from Egg hatches
and
Double XP
You can also buy Lucky eggs for half off the normal cost.
A couple of thoughts!
First, this would be a great time to do some evolution and use the lucky to get tons of XP. Take advantage of these events to boost your XP as much as you can. Hopefully you have saved up some of your candy because this is really the time to use it. The event combined with a lucky egg will give you 4x the normal amount of experience.
2nd the expanded roster of Pokemon that can appear in 2k is really exciting. This means we might get the 1st or 2nd gen starters in 2k eggs! Its really a great reason to go out into whats shaping to be a beautiful Spring and start walking.
NOW keep in mind your old eggs are not subject to the new 2k rule so if you have old eggs you will want to hatch those quickly and get NEW EGGS PRONTO!!!!
Let me know what the best Pokemon is that you hatch from 2k Eggs!

Raids

Code was added in the last update that seems to set up a community level attack at gyms whereby a large number of people would partake in a battle. Many think this could be setting up events that were similar to the one shown in the initial Pokemon Go commercial where a crowd battled MewTwo over Times Square. These raids may be how the game releases Legendary Pokemon like Articuno, Moltres, Zappados, Mew and MewTwo to the masses. This would be a very cool addition to the game and create some exciting, and MASSIVE events.
On top of Legendary Pokemon releases there could also by holiday themed raids and also Battle Team Rocket or team vs team raids. The options here are many and it adds a much needed expansion to the games battling system.
There was also code added for messages having a Pokemon say his hungry. Speculation this is a new element of the game where you may need to periodically feed Pokemon that are left in gyms. If they are not fed they may suffer some kind of stat weakness.
Water Festival 3/22/2017

Today is a global water awarness day and to celebrate Niantic is having a water Pokemon festival. To celebrate water Pokemon will begin spawning everywhere and with greater spawn rates. Likewise rare Water pokemon like Lapras are more likely to show up.
DUDE I still need a Lapras and I need more Totodiles so this event sounds awesome!
One other fun thing is that a new hat will come out in the game that has Magicarp theme. That sounds pretty fun.
There is also a rumor that Shiny Pokemon may be released with the event. This is perhaps a 2nd part of the event. The last update also added some graphics to the pokedex that includes a seperate graphic for Shiny pokemon.Starting today, Magikarp, Squirtle, Totodile, and friends will be making a splash in the Pokémon GO Water Festival! https://t.co/PRaAiPCheopic.twitter.com/ZxQFkvd5g3— Pokémon GO (@PokemonGoApp) March 22, 2017
Pokemon Go Crystal Ball -3/13/17
CEO of Niantic John Haney has made some noise at some recent speeches about Pokemon Go. The Generation 2 Pokemon Release reignited the popular AR app but he recogonized that more would need to be done to keep the game popular. He promised three more major updates within this year.
There are many possibilities here:
1) Gym Battling Change
2) PVP Battling
3) Pokemon Trading
4) Pokemon Breeding
5) Release of Legendary Pokemon
6) Release of more Generations of Pokemon
7) New types of locations (PokeCenters, Daycares, Dungeons)
8) Random NPCs
9) New Team Dynamics
10) Competitive Events
My guess here is that Trading while commonly talked about is not high on there list. The reason for this is that comes with various problems. I think the biggest area they will look at is making gym battling more interesting and PVP battling.
Battling right now is half of the game but it is the weakest half of the game. My guess is that how battling is done receives a major upgrade at some point this year. I personally hope they also add in NPCs that you can battle for rewards but I really doubt they do it.
Feb 27, 2017 - Pokemon Day Celebration:

Pokemon Go is going to celebrate the anniversary of the Pokemon launch by releasing special Festive Pikachu.
There is also a rumor that the Pokemon Go event may have double xp.
There is also the rumor that game may launch "Shiny" Pokemon. Shiny pokemon are a special and rare version of Pokemon.
GEN2 is HERE!

Alright so there has not been a new update. However in the last update there was a lot of data added. LIKE A WHOLE LOT of stuff. News moves, new images, and new items. This amount of new data really seems like it was paving the way for a massive new update for Generation 2.
Over a 100 new moves were added into the game that cover all type sets except for the fairy type.
New Items include:
Kingsrock
SunStone
These are items that were used the original games for special kinds of evolution.
Added code for Avatar customization:
Belts
Glasses
Necklaces
Hats
There is also a Pokemon that 28 different forms. The forms are similar to the Christmas Pikachu where a Pokemon could be basically the same but appear slightly different. There is also likely to be an increased gender differences in many of the Pokemon. Trainer Tips in the below video mentions that he has found that Pikachu's has already migrated to having genders. You can tell the gender apart because a male Pikachu has a pointy tail and female Pikachu has a heart shaped tail.
Update: Jan 17 2017
Niantic made a few small updates. I don't think this change overwhelm anyone.
Update to Apple Watch to display Eggs obtained from Pokestops
Changed distance tracking to better account for GPS drift
Minor text fixes
I think many people are still wanting the release of Gen 2 Pokemon, Battling and Trading and until that occurs I don't many Pokemon Go fans are going to be excited. It is possible though that there were parts of this update that are hidden and are not being reported.
Holiday 2016 Update

New Baby Pokemon have been released that can only be hatched from eggs.
The baby Pokemon are earlier evolutions of previously released Gen 1 Pokemon.
Update: October 17, 2016 - High Speed Brake
Pokemon Go has appeared to have lost the ability to be played at High Speed. This is likely a safety consideration built into the game to force users to walk to play it. The game will no longer show Pokemon on the nearby screen or have spawn when traveling above a certain speed.
Additionally the game can sometimes error on GPS and block spawns even when walking. This change is frustrating many users.
There are some quirks that may need to be ironed out with this update but this is something I have expected since the game first launched and I witnessed many people playing the game while driving.....badly.
It is too bad though because many people have been playing the game while riding on Public Transportation where it has previously worked very well.
Update: October 10, 2016 - Pokedex - Seen vs Caught Change
Pokemon Go has updated the Pokedex to update seen Pokemon with Pokemon that are encountered in gyms. This means you no longer need to catch a Pokemon to have seen it.
This also means that the visible pokemon in the Pokedex are no longer a reliable gauge for the Pokemon you have caught. The Pokedex will list a total number of seen and caught pokemon. If you click on an individual Pokemon it will also tell you the number of that Pokemon you have caught.
Official Announcement from Niantic
Trainers,
Pokémon GO is in the process of being updated to version 0.41.2 for Android and 1.11.2 for iOS devices. Below are some release notes and comments from our development team.
- Catch Bonus: Trainers can earn a catch bonus for a Pokémon type as they catch more of a specific type.
- Updated Gym Training: Trainers can now bring six Pokémon to battle at friendly Gyms. The CP of the Pokémon you are battling may be temporarily adjusted lower for your training session.
- Egg & Incubator Screens: These will periodically update the distance walked without the Trainer needing to close and reopen the screen.
- Fixed several audio issues.
- Decreased the evolution animation time.
- Minor fixes
Update: October 7, 2016 - Gym Training Change
New update makes it so that a player can go to a "friendly" gym (A gym controlled by their team Blue, Yellow, Red) and use 6 Pokemon in training sessions instead of one. Also the Pokemon guarding the gym will adjust their CP lower to match that of players CP. This makes it so that a new player with low level Pokemon could still enjoy battling at a gym instead of showing up and getting clobbered.
Official Announcement from Niantic
Gym Training Just Got Easier... Trainers, As we continue to make improvements to Pokémon GO, we have made an enhancement to the Gym experience for Trainers of all levels. In an upcoming version of Pokémon GO, when training at a friendly Gym, Trainers will be able to bring six Pokémon to battle instead of one. In addition, the CP of the Pokémon you are training against may be temporarily adjusted lower during your training session to generally match your Pokémon’s battle capabilities. No matter what your level, you can now have an impact on your team’s Gym. Walk with your Buddy Pokémon to that nearby landmark and show your Team Leader that you can battle with the best!
Update: September 13, 2016
A few major updates have occurred. Appraisal feature has been added to let players know how strong their pokemon is relative to other pokemon of the same species. There is also a new Nearby tracking screen and the biggest update of the all the Buddy Pokemon feature. The Buddy Pokemon feature has not yet rolled out to everyone but is live in some areas. Some have found that the Buddy Pokemon feature has also only hit some providers and not others.
For more details on Buddy feature:

Update: August 12, 2016
Two major noticeable changes. The Nearby Screen is now called the Sighting Screen for Pokemon tracking. It does not show distance. There is grass image added behind the pokemon in the sightings screen that looks cool but otherwise does not seem to do anything. The screen updates about every 15 seconds with the Pokemon active on your map that you can see.

A driving warning now flashes on the screen if Pokemon Go sees you are going to fast. You must confirm you are passanger. The problem with this is that gps signals sometime seem to jump in the ap making it think you are driving when you are fact sitting on your couch or walking.
Update: July 30, 2016 -
Niantic released the following update with the following changes -
- The footprints on the nearby screen were removed as they were not working correctly
- Additional clothing options were added so Poketrainers could dress in the gear of their teams
- Battling changes were made to reduce the power of some quick attacks like water gun. This change is meant to increase the use of special attacks. It also should help reduce the effectiveness Vaporeon. Who had used these attacks in a dominating fashion. More damage was added to be based off type or comparable damage making picking the correct type of Pokemon important. Early reports say that Vaporeon's effectiveness has been very reduced.
- Transferring Pokemon was made faster. Instead of scrolling to the bottom of the Pokemon information tab and clicking transfer a circular button with three lines was added to the bottom right corner and is always visible. This button opens a menu where a Pokemon can either be Favorited or Transferred.
- An extra pop up warning was added when first turning on the game.
- Battery saving mode removed
