Variant Covers have at times critisized for being mostly gimmicks.  However, many times those gimmicks have proved popular with fans and collectors.  In the 90s in particular many covers were sold with a type of gimmick   All kinds of things were used in the 90s: die cut, embossing, foil, holograms, and sometimes just a random change like a different character added.
