I am not a Buddhist but I have always greatly respected and admired the Fourteenth Dalai Lama. The man's life is amazing in its scope, its struggles and its triumphs. The first time I remember becoming acquainted with the story is with the film 7 years in Tibet staring Brad Pitt. The film was phenomenal but what is both even more amazing and tragic is that the saga and struggled of Tibet continues on to this day. Tibet remains under the control of China, and their leader remains in exile.
Tibetans still want to find a way to get their plight on the forefront of people's minds to continue to put pressure on China. One way they are looking to do this is through ......comic books or rather a graphic novel.
"Human Kindness is my religion" Fourteenth Dalai Lama
Supporters of Tibet have created a graphic novel called Man of Peace that tells the life story of the Dalai Lama. The graphic novel goes through the struggles of the Dalai Lama from the beginning of his journey as a spiritual leader of the world. The spiritual journey will be highlighted as he arrives at the philosophy of being Human Kindness and pursing Peace.
This graphic novel has been a project that has taken years to get funding and be completed an I am happy to say that it is now out!
There are so many comics now but if you want something different, something good, something that might really affect you then check this out. It has not for whatever reason been covered by the main comic news outlets and to be honest I can't imagine why. Its not coming out through the traditional comic channels but its looks like hallmark in how comics are used as a medium.

The comic is edited by Bob Thurman and the artwork is done by a master of traditional Tibetan artwork artist Rabkar Wangchuk; further developed visually by a graphic artist team led by Steve Buccellato. The art is very realistic looking with the faces on the page looking very much like real people. The art is also saturated with color and it really comes across as very powerful. There is some really striking pieces of work that intermix real world with the spiritual world and how they interact. I can't say I have seen anything quite like this especially not with art this good.

This work was conceived and its script written by William Meyers, keeping a promise made to the Dalai Lama in 1993. It has been expanded and refined with the editorial guidance and oratorical inspiration of Robert Thurman; backed by the financial and organizational support of Tibet House US; joined in creative collaboration by master of both traditional and modern Tibetan art Rabkar Wangchuk; and completed in book form with the technical assistance and production coordination of digital artist Michael Burbank.

The story of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, the world’s foremost proponent of peace and nonviolence, as depicted in this full-color graphic novel, tells in its second and third parts of his educational training in childhood to ascend to the height of Buddhist learning and the political leadership of Tibet. He attains maturity and bodhisattvic power just in time to cope head-on with the invasion and occupation of Tibet by Communist China. The clash of implacably opposed cultural forces over the years of occupation leads finally, in 1959, to the young Dalai Lama’s escape, with his family and closest followers, into exile in India.The fourth and fifth parts relate the life of His Holiness in exile, as spokesperson for the vast community of Tibetan exiles now established in countries around the world. Still longing for return to an autonomous, if not independent homeland, the Dalai Lama and his people deal with unrelenting hardships while continuing to live the Tibetan lifestyle of compassion, devotion, and indefatigable good cheer.
Over the years in exile the Dalai Lama becomes the representative of universal responsibility and compassion for all life forms and an exemplar of the peaceful life defended and maintained, no matter how embattled or relentlessly persecuted.
