How do you beat Arcanine? Pokemon Go questions
You have entered a gym battle with lion/dog Pokemon Arcanine. He stands before you looking extremely noble. You may be briefly in awe of the noble looking Pokemon right up until he crushes you and sends you home packing. Arcanine is a very powerful Pokemon with fast and brutal attacks and a strong defense. That said no Pokemon is invincible there is always a way to bring one down even one as powerful as Arcanine.
Arcanine is not the most common of Pokemon but I have started to find a few Growlith near my home. Others must have been finding the same ones because I have noticed a growing number of Arcanine in gyms and many on the very top of them. A pokemon this competitive needs a strategy to bring it down so lets get to work.

Want to take down this furious fella? Its not easy but it can be done with some planning.
Arcanine is a FIRE type Pokemon. As such he does poorly against Water Pokemon, Rock Pokemon and Ground Pokemon.
Looking at these types the most common and I think the best pokemon for the job is Vaporeon. Vaporeon is a very powerful Pokemon all by itself and with a WATER based edge it should be able to beat Arcanine pretty easily. Vaporeon is based off the pokemon Eevee, which appears pretty frequently in most areas and is very powerful. Keep in mind that Vaporeon is one of three different evolution that Eevee can evolve into. As far as other WATER Pokemon I have seen a few people also take Arcanine down with Starmie. However, I can not find a Starmie in my area for the life of me. Getting WATER Pokemon sometimes is dependent on being near large bodies of water which being in Colorado I am most assuredly not. If you share my predicament you might consider Rock Pokemon.
Another fairly common Pokemon to use is the Geo Dude evolved form. There are a lot of Geodudes in my area and they evolve into a powerful Rock Pokemon called Graveler and then into an even more powerful form called Golem.
There are a couple other Rock pokemon to consider. I have seen one person near me a powerful Onyx. This would also work but heretofore I have had a hard time catching one. These other Rock pokemon just seem too rare to recommend for practical advice.Here is the strategy in action. A much weaker Vaporeon (654 vs 1740) uses his WATER type attacks vs Arcanine FIRE defense to great effect:
With that proof I think its safe to safe that Vaporeon can work very well in this battle.
One other thought, I have is that a Vaporeon / Arcanine gym combo is pretty tough together the pair would do well against most types of Pokemon. Watch out for gyms that have both and set your roster appropriately.
